Nyala Lodge
A respectful revival of a classic Kruger-style bush camp.

Rooted in
Heritage
Set on the banks of the seasonal Mohlabetsi River, Nyala Lodge was a delicate renovation project focused on retaining the soul of the original Kruger-style rondavels.
Nyala Lodge was not about reinventing—it was about rediscovering. The brief was clear: retain the nostalgic charm of the existing thatched rondavels while subtly elevating the experience for modern safari-goers. Set in the heart of the Balule Reserve - part of the greater Kruger, this lodge sits in a place where time slows down, and our work needed to echo that rhythm.
The original camp had undeniable character—thick-walled rondavels, earthy textures, and a classic Kruger Park aesthetic that evoked simpler, slower days in the bush. Our job was to preserve that, not polish it away. We upgraded each unit by adding discreet, modern en-suite bathrooms, using soft finishes to avoid overpowering the existing architecture.
Decks were rebuilt, walkways reconfigured, and private bomas were added to create space for solitude and riverfront fireside moments. The structures may be new, but they feel as though they've always been part of the camp. Every addition was designed to complement, not compete.
As with many of our wilderness builds, this one came with its share of logistical challenges. Materials had to be carefully sourced and transported without disturbing the environment, and our team worked quietly, respectfully, and often under the watchful gaze of resident Ezulweni the famous tusker elephant bull.
The final result is a beautifully restored bush lodge that feels familiar to long-time visitors, but now offers a level of comfort that enhances the stay.
Nyala Lodge is a tribute to the timelessness of Kruger, where heritage and hospitality meet beneath the thatch.
